The Life and Times of Vera Wang

If you are a fashion enthusiast, then you will have probably heard the name of Vera Wang at least once.

The designer is in fact known to most for her bridal wear, however she also produces a range of haute couture fashion for red carpets and other exclusive events. She has designed dresses for many celebrities, from Katy Perry to Rita Ora, always bringing together the traditional elegance that distinguished her style, with modern designs.

This is just what most of us now about Vera Wang but there is more to her!

Vera was born in 1949 in New York, from a couple of immigrants from Shanghai. Since she was a child, she has been attending haute couture fashion shows together with her mother and she attributes her love for the fashion world to this.

An interesting fact about her that not everyone knows is that, before working for Vogue magazine, she has been a figure skating athlete, completing in the 1968 and 1969 U.S. National Championships.

In 1990, she started working as a bridal wear designer and, with some financial help from her father, she opened one of her flagship salons at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City where, still today, many of her modern yet traditional wedding dresses are showcased.

She acquired a strong following, especially in Hollywood, where more and more celebrities were appreciative of her innovative designs.

Vera expanded her production and started working no longer as a bridal wear designer only, but also as an haute couture designer. Since then, many celebrities have decided to wear her creations at exclusive events and red carpets, from Halle Berry to Goldie Hawn.

Even the former First Lady of the United State of America, Michelle Obama, has chosen an elegant black, off-the-shoulders dress by Vera Wang for the White House state dinner in 2015.

It’s not uncommon to see Vera at such exclusive events, usually dressed in black or white ethereal dresses, however, it’s much more common seeing her at the end of her catwalk shows, sporting a more casual outfit.

That is, in fact, something you have probably already noticed about the fashion designer.

She is (almost) always dressed in a black outfit and, if you are wondering why, think about Steve Jobs’ black T-shirt and jeans or just read what Vera had to say about this to Harper’s Bazaar, “Like most designers, I have a uniform, and mine is a legging. And if it’s not a legging, it’s a pant that’s like a legging”.

Vera Wang has established herself over the years to become one of the most successful, well-known fashion designers all over the world!
